Commissions
In
April 2006 'New
Eyes' welcomed proposals from Creative people, individually or in groups, to
apply to the project for funding to make ‘new work’ about
the Blackdown Hills, or to
deliver community based arts projects. These had to in some
way involve digital technology which can be at the
centre of the work or simply a hidden tool in making or
recording the work. Training
through a series of free workshops and
individual project support was also offered, although applicants
had to
be keen to learn new
skills or increase their knowledge of new technologies.
Practitioners had to live or work in the Blackdown Hills, an
Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty spanning the Somerset and
Devon border.
Grants of up to £3,000 were available,
with a total grant budget of £27,000
The
project received 37 applications involving over 70 creative
people. In total the money sought was over £93,000.
Therefore the selection committee made up of:
Erica Steer,
Arts Council of England, South West; Phil
Shepherd, Somerset Film and Video; Simon Hitchens,
artist; Ann Jones, Arts
Consultant; John Hiscock, Retired Fine
Art Lecturer; Jack Purssell and Jane Hole,
local residents could only fund 28% of the applications.
On 23rd May 2006 the final selection panel met and agreed
to fund 12 applications and to support two further
opportunities for
workshops and training
Commissioned work will
be carried out between June 2006 and summer 2007 with final
events and exhibitions programmed for Aug/Sept 2007
